A rebel scooter from Gilera

From Gilera press release

ICE, the radical new 50cc Gilera scooter, takes fun and scooters to new levels. Essential, compact and light, ICE is chiefly designed to make its rider stand out from the crowd in urban traffic. Acceleration, pick-up, agility and lightning-quick brakes are ICE’s arms against the daily war, and the reasons why this rebel scooter will appeal on the street.

Gilera’s marketing division worked with the University of Bologna’s sociology department to identify symbolic “reference worlds”. These reference worlds provided the stimulus for an object personifying the mix of ruggedness, innovation and sheer nonsense the average European teenager desires in terms of mobility. ICE’s design sharply differentiates the materials and textures it uses, and all the materials used to make the ICE are recyclable.

ICE is built around an unusual pressed steel structure Gilera call their “Axe Frame”, a name inspired by both the shape and strength of the frame. Its build recalls Gilera’s chassis expertise, but with an eye to the future. The torsional resistance is 400 per cent higher than that of a conventional frame. For the plastics, research centred around producing a front shield with exceptionally high resistance to scratches and abrasions, while providing a semi-transparent effect. The striking frame houses the reliable air cooled Hi-Per 2, a powerful, silent and environment-friendly latest generation two stroke 50cc engine. Sparkling performance for easy, fun riding was the objective when choosing this propulsion. The result is a vehicle with very quick reflexes, making ICE the ideal city ride. A wide and strong front fork with 30 mm shafts enhances reliability. A single damper adjustable to four positions at the rear adapts to any kind of riding. 10 inch painted aluminium alloy rims mount extra large tyres. The brakes are a 200 mm disc in front and a 110 mm rear drum. Liquid crystal multi-functional instrumentation for the Gilera ICE, and a powerful complex surface headlamp for safe night riding.

The rear of the seat hoods the rear light and direction indicators, with a reflector under the wraparound rear wheel protector that “closes” the vehicle perfectly. The GSF (Gilera Spoon Fender) is a new type of mudguard that has the dual function of protection and licence plate and reflector support.

Two colour versions are available for the Gilera ICE: ICE and Fire (fluo red), and ICE and Steel (bare metal).
